What Size Barbell Do You Need? 6 ft vs 7 ft Sizing

A 7 ft Olympic bar is 86.6 in long and racks because its shaft spans 51.5 in. Most 6 ft bars span 44.5 in and will not. The sizing math for your room.

Quick Answer: Buy a 7 ft Olympic bar (86.6 in, 45 lb) unless you physically cannot fit one. It is the only common size that reliably racks in a power rack, because its shaft spans 51.5 in between the inside collars and a standard rack is about 48 in wide inside. Barbell length looks like the easy decision in a home gym build. It is the one that most often gets returned.

The reasoning that causes it is sound: the room is small, a 7 ft bar is long, a 6 ft bar is shorter, so the 6 ft bar must be the small-room answer. Every part of that is true except the conclusion.

The trap: most 6 ft bars will not rack

A power rack holds the bar in J-cups mounted on the inside faces of the uprights. For the bar to sit in them, the shaft has to be longer than the distance between those uprights — the sleeves have to overhang on both sides.

A standard Olympic power rack is roughly 48 in wide inside. A 7 ft bar's 51.5 in shaft clears it with about 1.75 in of slack per side, which is not generous but works. That is not a coincidence: rack widths were designed around the bar.

Most 6 ft bars have a shaft of about 44.5 in. That is three and a half inches narrower than the rack. The bar does not sit in the J-cups at all — the sleeves land inside the uprights and the bar drops straight through.

This is the part worth being careful about, because the specification that matters is not printed on the box. Listings advertise overall length. Rackability depends on shaft length, which you often have to ask for.

  • Some 6 ft bars are built specifically to rack, with shortened sleeves giving a shaft near 50 in. These exist and they work.
  • A shaft under about 42 in cannot be called rackable by any rack standard.
  • The CAP 6 ft bar, one of the most commonly bought, has a 45.75 in shaft — still short of a 48 in rack.

Before you buy any short bar: measure the inside width of your rack, upright face to upright face, then ask the seller for the shaft length between the inside collars. If the shaft is not comfortably longer than that measurement, the bar will not rack in it.

How much room a barbell actually needs

Every competing page answers this with "about 10 feet." Here is where that number comes from, and where it is wrong.

The bar is 86.6 in — 7.2 ft. But you do not just need somewhere to put it; you need to slide plates onto both ends. Allow roughly a foot at each end and the wall requirement becomes about 9 ft of clear run. Ten feet is comfortable rather than required.

That is the lateral requirement. The bigger constraint is the training zone. Our planner treats a loaded barbell as needing a roughly 7 × 7 ft open area, because you do not use a barbell standing still — you walk it out, you set your feet, you row and press and lunge around it.

That last row is our own measurement, not an estimate. A standard 20 × 20 ft two-car garage leaves a usable strip of 37.8 inches once both drivers can still open a door — and even in the best case, with the cars pushed as far as they go, the strip is 0.8 inches short of the bar. Which bar for which situation

Get a 7 ft Olympic bar if you have a rack, or expect to own one. This is most people. It is the standard for a reason: it fits every rack and bench, it handles more weight than you will ever put on it at home, and it is what you will use in any commercial gym. Get a 6 ft bar only if you have no rack, and you are training with the bar on the floor or on low stands — deadlifts, rows, cleans, floor presses. In a genuinely tiny room with no rack, the shorter bar is easier to manoeuvre and easier to store. Browse 6 ft Olympic bars.

Get a 15 kg women's bar (2,010 mm, 25 mm shaft) if the main lifter has smaller hands. It still racks — the shaft is full length — and the thinner grip makes a real difference to how secure the bar feels. It is a grip decision, not a strength one.

Avoid 1-inch "standard" bars. They take 1 in plates rather than 2 in Olympic plates, so every plate you buy is locked to that bar, they typically rate for far less weight, and the sleeves usually do not spin. The savings are real and so is the dead end.

Plates: how much to actually buy

The most common mistake after bar length is buying too many plates at once.

  • A sensible starting set is around 200 lb of plates — pairs of 2.5, 5, 10, 25 and 45 lb. With a 45 lb bar that is 245 lb loaded, which is more than most people will squat within their first year.
  • Buy the 45s last if money is tight. Two 45s cost more than the whole small-plate spread and you cannot use them until you are already strong.

  • Small plates matter more than you think. Progress stalls without 2.5 lb jumps once the lifts get heavy.

What to skip

  • A second bar. Specialty bars — trap bars, safety squat bars, EZ curl bars — are genuinely useful and genuinely not the second thing you buy. Get strong on one bar first.
  • Collars costing more than $30. Spring clips work. Nicer collars are a convenience, not a safety upgrade.
  • A 5 ft bar with a rack. All the rackability problems of a 6 ft bar, plus less room to grip.
